Inside My Human Heart

The heart is a hollow muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the blood vessels to various parts of the body by repeated, rhythmic contractions. That’s the definition that I found on a medical site this afternoon, but I do not completely agree with that. I know, through experience and feeling that my heart is more. If you decide to take a look inside, there is so much that you would see.

Inside, you will see strength- the strength of a physically healthy heart. It is indeed a strong muscle, working in its capacity to allow me to achieve my physical ambitions and achieve my goals.

Inside, you may also see a certain fragility. While my heart is strong, it is also delicate, having been dropped and battered a bit over the years. Do not mistake the lines for weakness. They simply tell the stories from my life, stories that have helped shape me into the woman that I am. Consider yourself lucky if you see this part, as it is often hidden.

Inside, you will see the resolve and tenacity that has allowed me to work through the different obstacles that have come across my path. They are closely intertwined with strong determination, that which has allowed me to keep going when what I truly wished was to stop.

Inside, you will see unwavering compassion for those in need, those with special needs, and those who are suffering. That same compassion is extended to animals and nature. This place in my heart has occasionally contributed to the lines of fragility, but I’d rather have those lines than give up even the smallest amount of this special, sacred space.

Inside, you will see a place of patience. Admittedly, the size of this place fluctuates, but it is always there.

Inside, you will see a ferocity rivaling that of a warrior that roars when those I care for and about are threatened in any way.

Inside, you will see what you may mistake as stubbornness. Take another look, for you will see that it is actually passion, a strong passion to stand behind that which I believe in.

Inside, throughout and encompassing all of the above, you will see an extraordinary capacity for love. In a world that is filled with judgement, racism, bigotry, and hate, I strive my human best to maintain my heart’s capacity for love, tolerance, understanding, and acceptance

Hollow… I think not.
